Spyderco Caly 3.5 Black G-10 PlainEdge Knife

New favorite knife

I have a few knives and recently had been using a Spyderco FFG Delica as my go-to knife to carry/use (great knife by the way, especially if you don’t want to spend over $100, like for the Caly). But after purchasing it and carrying it for some time, the Caly 3.5 has taken over as my new favorite, and let me outline some of the reasons why:

- AWESOME clip for deep carry. The knife literally disappears into your pocket, with only the clip exposed. Most knives have around 0.5-1″ sticking out of your pocket (some more), which can draw judging stares from some people. Despite sinking all the way into your pocket, this knife is not awkward to pull out and does not get in the way of putting other things in your pocket.

- VG10 is a solid all purpose blade steel; great rust resistance and it will take and hold a fine edge (I shaved hairs off my arm with no problem out the box). I am also a fan of full flat ground (FFG) knives and find it to be a simple yet effective blade…

Riveted handle, allen wrench pivot, and no washers?

With all the good reviews I really wanted to like this knife. But I wish at least one of them had mentioned the three issues in the title of my review in their reviews. They were very apparent to me within minutes of receiving this knife today.

The shape and feel of the knife are fantastic. Blade is sharp and it has good jimping. Fit my hand very nicely.

However, this knife does not have any washers (deal-breaker #1) and my knife was full of some sort of gritty stuff in the pivot that made a scratchy feeling when I opened and closed it. I understand that knives can sit in warehouses etc. and dust can get in them so I put some oil in there and worked it a bit to loosen up the grit then washed it out with warm soapy water and re-oiled the whole knife and soaked up the excess with a microfiber cloth…still felt gritty as if something was not right inside the knife….

…with all my other Spydercos (Para 2, Superleaf, Native 5, Sage 1, Pacific Salt,…

the right size, weight, and blade = perfect EDC

This is a high quality, versatile, well put together knife.

Until I bought this knife, my favorite EDC (among many options in my collection) had been the Benchmade Mini Griptillian (the less common sheepsfoot blade with hole opener) because it is small, light, easy to open and close, and feels great in the hand. I feel that the Spyderco Caly 3.5 is the first knife which can credibly compete with the Mini Griptillian for the title top EDC, at least for my needs (small but useful knife which does crowd my pocket). EDC means every day carry, by the way.

For those familiar with Spyderco, I’d say that this knife is much superior to their popular Delica model and a much better EDC choice for those looking for a relatively small knife.

Strengths:

- long blade (3.5 in) with better handle to blade ratio than most Spydercos

- relatively light and thin, you don’t even notice it is in your pocket until you need it

- fully flat ground blade -…
