Better, but not perfect
I had really hoped to give this knife a 5 star review. Unfortunately, it falls a bit short of my expectations.
When Schrade came out with the SCHF1 knives, they were a little too long, and had a partially serrated blade (which is difficult to sharpen, and creates a weak point).
Those problems were addressed with this new knife, the SCHF1SM. The blade is the perfect length, and the serrations are gone.
But, they also made the handle shorter, and thinner. This means that you can stuff fewer items into the handle storage.
If you’re listening, Schrade, make one of these knives with the original (SCHF1)handle size, small (SCHF1SM) blade length, and no serrations, and you will have a serious winner. Also, omit the screwdriver kit to keep costs lower (especially the magnet in the end cap) and include a compass inside the end cap.
It’s a nice screwdriver kit, but nobody is going to be carrying a knife that big anywhere they would…
Schrade SCHF-1SM One-Piece Survival Knife a Winner
If you are considering a heavy duty, no nonsense knife for camping or survival purposes, this one has got to be on your short list. Patterned after the highly successful, but much, much more expensive Chris Reeve one-piece fixed blade knives, Schrade has done an excellent job of capturing both the look and the feel of those now discontinued items.
Hollow handle knives are notorious for being poorly made since the blade and the handle are usually pieced together, which creates an obvious weakness in the design. Schrade is using a solid piece of 1070 high carbon tool steel to mill out a one-piece workhorse that should conquer most or all of your needs. Some key features: the knife is well balanced, the buttcap is threaded onto the hollow handle and seals with an “O” ring, the blade design retains full thickness throughout most of its length reducing the likelihood of the blade snapping during heavy chopping or moderate prying (1070 has good resilience), the buttcap can be…
Good Sturdy Knife
I purchased this knife back in 2011. I was looking for an affordable, very sturdy, utility knife for bike touring and general camping, plus I just like knives. After spending a month or two looking over all of the possibilities I chose this one partly due to the cost and mostly due to the one piece steel construction. I wanted a knife that would be as bullet proof as possible. One I could use as a knife, ax, hammer, pry bar, you name it. I wanted it to be strong but I didn’t want it to be overly expensive so I could abuse it at will without the consideration harming it. So the Schrade SCHF1SM appeared to fit the bill so I purchased it.
The knife is a big heavy chunk of metal, feels good in the hand, and looks just about indestructible. Just what I was looking for. The sheath wasn’t fancy but it appears well put together and does the job. It comes with a bonus smaller pouch you can put a sharpener or another small folding knife in, handy. There is a nice but pretty…
