I don’t use them as they were intended.
I attach them to the bottom of my cheap tubular bird feeders and use them to collect the seed that would have fallen to the ground. How I do it is drill a tiny hole in the bottom center of the bird feeder and then drill a bigger hole in the center of one of these plates. I then attach the plate, using a long self-tapping screw to the bottom of the feeder. Works like a charm. Sure beats the heck out of buying the more expensive feeders with the bottom plate built in. I have seen as many as three Cardinals sitting on one plate under a feeder and the set-up supported their weight just fine.
None of my feeder creations has fallen to the ground, and I’m pretty sure the plate would not survive the fall. But, it only takes a second to attach another.
